The constable of Zoben has been quietly diverting surplus stone and linen — ostensibly destined for the Earl of Vemion’s storehouses — to a private buyer across the border. The profits fund a personal retinue of sellswords loyal only to the constable, a dangerous hedge against the day the Earl’s patience with his remote holdings finally runs out.

A shepherd on the Atressa moorlands recently discovered a partially exposed barrow containing pre-migration Jarin grave goods of extraordinary quality. He has told no one but the village herbalist, who recognises the burial markers as belonging to a Jarin chieftain cursed by his own druids. The herbalist fears that disturbing the site will bring ruin upon Zoben and its surrounds.
