Kaldoran Hundreds

Kaldor has fifty-one hundreds and forests in total, each overseen by a bailiff or forester. The offices are an important part of Kaldoran local politics — in day-to-day life of the commons, the bailiff and the forester are the most familiar representatives of royal authority. Because holders of these offices are local nobles, the distinction between landlord and king’s officer tends to blur in the minds of peasants.

Some offices are held in perpetual or hereditary grant; others at the king’s pleasure. The bailiff of any hundred wields enormous local influence and can make life miserable for the lord of a manor.

The royal forests are sparsely populated and subject to forest law. The offices of chief ranger and chief forester are often sinecures — the holder rarely performs duties directly, but the salaries of deputy rangers provide a convenient way to reward retainers from the king’s pocket.

Balimshire

Hundreds and Forests: Anvusen, Cholas, Chyle, Marindas, Miona, Niremos, and the Forest of Lonemor.

The Lorzands of Matass hold the baileyship of Marindas Hundred as part of their fief. The baileyship of Cholas Hundred is an appurtenance of the bishopric of Kephrus. The Master-Forester of Lonemor, by life grant with reversion to his heir, is the Earl of Balim. The forest is patrolled by his deputy, Sir Dregald Drascar of Balin, who is a vassal of the earl’s cousin the bishop of Kephrus.

Meselyneshire

Hundreds and Forests: Allence, Ambarnis, Myaman, Navintas, Nelafayn, Revabyne, the Forest of Arien, the Chase of Meralace, and the Taelda (Northern) March.

Notable features:

  • The baileyship of Nelafayn was granted to the bishopric of Nurez by the House of Tane.
  • The baileyship of Myaman Hundred was granted in perpetuity to the Nevans of Nevanfal by Haldan I.
  • The Chase of Meralace (north and south) was granted for life to Sir Maldan Harabor of Tentru by the king on his 21st birthday.
  • The office of Warden of the Northern March is customarily joined to that of Sheriff of Meselyneshire. The March stretches from the Efrel River south to the River Shem north. The Warden’s duties are to protect traffic on the Fur Road (especially the annual Orbaal caravans), show the royal banner, and maintain relations with Taelda “subjects.”

Nephshire

Hundreds and Forests: Dobraine, Fethael, Tonallan, the Forests of Fyaslor and Kirsta, and the Rangerships of Kanir and Yalten-Hania.

Notable features:

  • The baileyship of Tonallan Hundred is held in hereditary grant by the Linnots of Janed and Furanth. Though responsible to the Sheriff of Neph, they owe feudal allegiance to the king as Earl of Meselyne.
  • The ranger of Yalten-Hania principally patrols the Silver Way between Chalce and Naniom Bridge. Currently held by the Reblena of Chalce, who performs the duties conscientiously.
  • The ranger of Kanir has never set foot in his jurisdiction — the district is populated only by Taelda and Gargun, without need for patrols. The office (currently held by Baron Indama of Getha) is a sinecure.

Oselshire

Hundreds and Forests: Asolade, Daynora, Firithel, Siloryne, Valganara, and the Forest-Ranges of Orsinal, Peihlne, and Remil.

Notable features:

  • The Firith barons of Kobing are hereditary Chief Foresters of Orsinal. The Ranges of Peihlne and Remil are customarily attached to the office of Lord Warden of Oselmarch, also customarily held by the barons of Kobing — giving the House of Firith authority throughout eastern Oselshire.
  • The royal fief of Hutop is one of the Crown’s largest land agglomerations; its supervision is divided into two circuits. The sheriff renders account for the western circuit (Daynora Hundred); the bailiff of Hylesim Manor renders for the east (Siloryne and Valganara).
  • The earls of Osel have traditionally pressed to have their men named to the baileyship of Hylesim, extending their influence over all royal manors in the Hundred.

Semethshire

Hundreds and Forests: Bredan, Endrunel, Tuselion, Wosendel, and the Forests of Calushid, Dunam, and Semethe.

Once the kingdom of Kephria, Semethshire is largely formerly cultivated land turned wild. Most inhabitants live in the four settled hundreds east of the Kald. The western forest hundreds were desolated by the Kath in the second century and never reclaimed — they are treated as part of Chelmarch, patrolled by the warden’s men. Despite its small size east of the Kald, Semethshire is the most densely settled and fertile of Kaldor’s shires, home to many of Kaldor’s richest knightly families.

Notable features:

  • Cedamyne and Tarial are held as hereditary hundred-bailiffs by the Morhuns of Valedon and by Tarial Abbey respectively.
  • No forest hundreds, though the bailiff of Rethelsyne is allowed pay for half a dozen foresters to patrol the wooded eastern two-thirds of the hundred.

Vemionshire

Hundreds and Forests: Atressa, Grimruld, Lynnfana, Tishilan, the Forests of Kythlim, Mylelim, and Rumerill, the Liberty of Halaina, and the Rangerships of Thicesund and Valdrun.

Notable features:

  • The four populated hundreds lie in the Vemion plain, bounded east by the Valdrun Downs and west by the Forests of Lim.
  • The Rangership of Thicesund is customarily held by the barons of Nenda.
  • The Liberty of Halaina was granted by charter in 482 by Queen Myselbane: the abbot of Halaina has exclusive jurisdiction over almost all crimes and suits within its bounds; no royal official may enter unbidden. The charter also placed the Rangership of Valdrun in the gift of Halaina’s abbot, who has since given the office to the Reblena of Kelen.
