Nephen River

A major tributary of the Kald River, draining Nephshire from the Sorkin Mountains foothills westward.

Course

The Nephen rises in the Sorkin foothills of eastern Nephshire and flows west through Fethael, Dobraine, and Tonallan hundreds. The valley is the agricultural heart of Nephshire. The river continues west into Balimshire (Chyle and Marindas hundreds), joining the Kald River at Kiban in Miona Hundred. The Nephen is fast-flowing; bulk goods cannot easily be barged upriver. It is bridged at several points and fordable in summer.

Crossings

  • Naniom Bridge — an ancient Khuzan-built stone bridge with four arches, in Dobraine Hundred. It carries the Silver Way to Azadmere. Goods from Azadmere are barged downstream from here to Kiban.
  • Esenor Bridge — an arched stone bridge connecting the river island keep of Esenor to the village on the bank. A stone wharf serves for transshipment.
  • Kiban — a bridge at the town; the miller’s son demands an unofficial toll. The Nephen Boat Gate provides water access to the castle.

Settlements

  • Getha — in the Nephen valley (Fethael Hundred), eastern bank
  • Jenkald — in the Nephen valley (Fethael Hundred)
  • Lethyl — in the Nephen valley (Fethael Hundred)
  • Esenor — on a river island commanding a bend in the Nephen (Marindas Hundred, Balimshire). Tisbury Manor lies across the river.
  • Kiban — at the confluence with the Kald River (Miona Hundred, Balimshire). New docks serve the Azadmere barge trade.

Confluences

  • Joins the Kald River at Kiban
  • The Selene River runs roughly parallel to the east; Thicesund Forest lies between the Nephen and the Selene.
