Church of Larani
Status in Kaldor: Official religion of the royal household — tax-exempt
Larani is the Lady of Paladins, goddess of chivalry, honorable battle, order, and justice. She is the most politically powerful religion in Kaldor. Unlike the warmth of Peoni or the cold calculation of Naveh, Larani’s theology centers on feudal order and the chivalric ideals of honor, courage, loyalty, and righteousness.
Larani is a war goddess, but one constrained by honor and conscience. She will not strike without warning or just cause. Her followers are knights, noble warriors, and those who see in feudalism an expression of divine order.
Divine Nature & Theology
Appearance
Most often depicted as a tall maiden clad in a white gown with red trim, silver circlets about her waist and head. In battle, she wears Angcaradina (blood-red mail), Hyvrik (red and white checkered shield), and wields Avarkiel (the Sword that Strikes True). Her divine realm is Tirithor, “The Land of the Mighty.”

The Feudal Ideal
Laranian theology is fundamentally ordered and hierarchical. Feudalism, properly practiced, reflects divine order. Each person has a well-defined place in society subject to various obligations, and has the right to various privileges. This structure — when enforced with honor and justice — represents Larani’s vision of the perfect society.
The Code of Chivalry
Larani’s followers are expected to uphold: Faith, Piety, Honor, Righteousness, Truth, Justice, Courage, and Strength.
Moral Paradox: Larani teaches that it is not the outcome that matters, but how that outcome was reached. A just warrior who loses with honor is more favored than an unjust warrior who wins through deception.
Relationship to Other Gods
- Agrik — Larani’s great enemy. Agrik represents chaos of mindless violence; Larani represents discipline and purpose. War between them is eternal.
- Peoni — Respected ally. Both serve order and justice through different means.
- Sarajin — Rival but not enemy. Both are war gods, but Sarajin lacks Larani’s honor and discipline.
- Save-K’nor — Valued for wisdom.
- Naveh — The subtle enemy. Deception and chaos directly oppose Laranian order.
- Morgath — Pure evil. Undeath and chaos are abominations.
Divine Servants
Mendiz — Larani’s greatest demi-divine servant, a winged lion of fearsome power who serves as chamberlain and constable of her divine hall (Dolithor). Represents divine justice and protection.
Church Organization
Hierarchy
The Church of Larani maintains a highly centralized structure:
- Sebrath (Pontiff) — Supreme authority; dwells at Tengela in Trierzon
- Lirrath (Primate) — Highest authority on Hârn; resides in Thay
- Tirnatha (Council) — Assembly of senior bishops; advises and constrains the Lirrath
- Ethelanca (Holy Office) — Internal intelligence and enforcement body
Most Laranians in eastern Hârn are associated with the clerical Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow or the fighting Order of the Lady of Paladins. Kaldor is outside the mainstream bureaucracy since both orders are headquartered in Melderyn.
Kaldorian Structure
- Serekela (Archbishop) — Highest Laranian authority in Kaldor; answerable to the Lirrath and Sebrath
- Rekela (Bishops) — Oversee individual dioceses
The Serekela is one of the largest landholders in Kaldor. The seat of the archdiocese is Caleme Abbey, the finest Laranian structure in the kingdom.
Key Figures
- Serekela Edine Kynn — Serekela of Kaldor, based at Caleme Abbey
- Serolan Aparna Meleken — Serolan (dean) of Caleme Abbey
- Suloran Lenera Firith — Suloran of Caleme Abbey
Laranian Dioceses
Established in 240 TR, the four dioceses approximate the borders of the four kingdoms:
- Nurez — covers roughly the old Kingdom of Pagostra; seat at Abriel Abbey
- Serelind — covers the old Kingdom of Serelind
- Kephrus — covers the old Kingdom of Kephria
- Pagostra — covers the old Kingdom of Nurelia

The Order of the Lady of Paladins
The fighting order of the Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow, maintaining military forces throughout eastern Hârn.

The Laranian Perspective on Kaldor
Royal Support
The Crown of Kaldor actively supports the Laranian church through tax exemptions, military protection, legal authority to enforce religious law, and social prestige through royal patronage.
Political Influence
The church wields considerable political power: clerical advisors to the king and nobles, control of moral authority (can legitimize or delegitimize noble claims), major land holdings, and provision of education.
Tensions with Royal Authority
Despite close alliance, tensions exist:
- The church ultimately answers to the Lirrath of Hârn, not the king
- Conflicts arise when religious law and secular law clash
- The church has used heresy charges to challenge royal authority
- Disputes over church holdings and peasant obligations

Kaldorian Strength (Post-Miginath Peace): The Order of the Lady of Paladins in Kaldor is at full strength following decades of peace — shield chapters protecting all bishops and the archbishop, five sword chapters defending principal trade routes, approximately 20 manor chapters, and a training center at Whyce (12 knights, 24 soldiers plus trainees).
All Kaldorian lands held by the Order are technically held through the Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow (not directly from the king), reinforcing clerical feudal independence.
